Background

Born January 19, 1807 in Virginia at Stratford Hall along the Potomac River, his father was none other than the famous Revolutionary war hero "Henry Light Horse Harry Lee " who also been a former governor of Virginia. His mother was Anne Carter of Shirley, who was also Henry Lee's second wife. Robert was the fourth child out of five from this marriage.
